The T.F. Green Airport Groton (IATA: GTO, ICAO: KGTN) is a public use airport located two miles west of the central business district of Groton, a city in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The airport is owned by the Town of Groton and operated by the Groton Airport Authority. It has one runway designated 3/21 with an asphalt surface measuring 2,301 by 75 feet (701 x 23 m).
The airport opened in 1929 as Groton Municipal Airport and was renamed T.F. Green Airport in 1957 after Colonel Thomas F. Green, Jr., an American aviation pioneer and manufacturer who founded the T.F. Green Company which became one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturers. The airport served as the main commercial air gateway to eastern Connecticut until its closure in 1983 due to low traffic volumes and competition from larger airports such as Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut and Hartford-Hartford International Airport in West Hartford, Connecticut. The airport reopened as a general aviation facility in 1985 and has since experienced consistent growth due to its location within close proximity of major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Boston which have fostered an interest among travelers for air travel within those cities. As a result of this growth, the Groton Airport Authority has plans to redevelop the airport into a full-fledged commercial hub that will serve as a connecting point for air travel throughout eastern Connecticut and beyond.
